A portal is a framework for integrating information, people and processes across an organization. The end user experience is typically a secure unified access point often in the form of web page that consolidates tools and information from a variety of applications and sources. Portals offer advantages over static home pages because they can provide user-specific, customized views based on the security of the user.  .

Having access to company information via a web browser has provided a new way of working since portal solutions can allow internal and external access to specific corporate information using secure authentication or Single sign-on. Portals offer tools to help organizations manage their data, applications and information more easily, and through personalized views. Portals are also able to integrate legacy applications and other portal objects through the use of portlets and web parts built for those legacy applications. Extended capabilities like workflow, collaboration, and policy-managed content publication can also be provided via a portal.

JSR-168 and JSR-286 Standards (Java Specification Request) allow the interoperability of portlets across different portal platforms. These standards allow portal developers, administrators and consumers to integrate standards-based portals and portlets across a variety of vendor solutions typically through WSRP (Web Service for Remote Portlets) technology.
